I've always loved backpacks and taught myself how to make them a few years ago. It's so satisfying to start with an idea, sketch it, and then take pieces that are flat and assemble them into this 3D object that you can use daily for years. My most recent backpacks (Pleat Fold V1-V3) take a very basic pattern and slowly tweak it to add complexity and features. V1 is a standard, no frills backpack with no padding and only one access point. I took the same pattern and created V2, which allows access from the top as well as the sides. It also has a padded back panel that can house a laptop or tablet. Other than that there's no organization except for a removable "shelf" on the inside that's perfect for hauling groceries. With V3 I put the seam and binding on the inside for a cleaner look. I also added a front org pocket that can house some chargers and other knick-knacks. I thought the wrong side of the Cordura fabric looked like waxed canvas and made it outward facing. The shoulder straps can also be tucked away for a clean, carry-on experience.
